From Market to Manufacturing Powerhouse: India Commences Commercial Chip Production at Mohali and Surat

'A Trustworthy Global Semiconductor Hub: PM Modi Urges Indian Talent Abroad to Return and Lead Next-Gen R&D'

In the 21st-century technological landscape, India is rapidly transforming from a high-demand consumer market into a world-class, reliable semiconductor manufacturer. Inaugurating the fifth edition of 'Semicon India 2026' at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that Indian-made microchips are officially reaching international clients across the globe. Addressing the nation on the auspicious occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti, he highlighted the seamless convergence of India's historic craftsmanship traditions with cutting-edge technology as the core driver for a self-reliant and developed nation (Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat).

Commercial Chip Production & Youth Skill Development

Outlining a comprehensive roadmap for India's technological ecosystem and skilled employment, the Prime Minister announced several landmark achievements and strategic targets:

Commercial Production Underway: Commercial manufacturing of chips has successfully commenced at two state-of-the-art semiconductor facilities located in Mohali and Surat.

100,000 Tech Talent Goal: To fulfill the surging demand of the global microelectronics sector, the government set a target to train 100,000 engineering students in semiconductor design and fabrication, with over 70,000 engineers already fully trained.

Call for R&D Repatriation: PM Modi extended a passionate invitation to young Indian researchers working abroad, encouraging them to return home and lead Advanced Technology and Research & Development (R&D) projects within India.

Scaling Fabless Enterprises: The national strategy heavily emphasizes expanding domestic fabless chip design companies and building core Intellectual Property (IP), with a dedicated focus on silicon photonics and compound semiconductors.

Energy Infrastructure for AI and Data Expansion

Addressing the exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), PM Modi noted that modern AI data centers deploy thousands of high-performance processors simultaneously, demanding immense computing capacity and uninterrupted power. To ensure a seamless energy supply for both semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs) and AI infrastructure, India is making massive investments in its national power sector to guarantee reliable, high-capacity electricity generation.

Key Indicators of Growing Global Trust in India

The Prime Minister underscored four major economic and technological milestones achieved over the past fortnight, demonstrating India's rising global standing:

Milestone / SectorKey Development & Global Impact
GDP Growth RateRecorded a resilient 7.8% GDP growth rate in the recent quarter despite severe geopolitical headwinds.
Sovereign Credit RatingUpgraded by a leading Japanese credit rating agency for the first time in 35 years.
Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC)Fully operationalized ~3,000 km of freight corridors across the country, vastly upgrading industrial supply chains and logistics.
Global Fintech Fest (GFF)Hosted in Mumbai to lead international dialogue on inclusive finance powered by Agentic AI, tokenization, and quantum computing.

A Reliable Partner for the Global Supply Chain

Recognizing the complex nature of the semiconductor industry, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that deep technological capabilities cannot be built overnight; they require decades of dedicated focus and domain expertise. As global industries actively seek resilient, transparent, and trustworthy manufacturing locations, India stands fully prepared to accept this global responsibility and drive the next wave of technological innovation.
