Historic Milestone in Indian Agriculture: Direct Carbon Credit Payouts Empower Small Farmers

Through Grow Indigo's 'AADI' program, 2,550 farmers in Punjab and Haryana receive between ₹3,000 and ₹15,000 directly into their bank accounts for adopting climate-resilient farming techniques.

In a historic first for Indian agriculture, smallholder farmers have received direct financial incentives—carbon credit payouts—for enriching soil organic carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, an initial tranche exceeding ₹2.9 crore has been distributed directly to 2,550 small farmers across Punjab and Haryana.

Eligible farmers received payouts ranging from a minimum of ₹3,000 to a maximum of ₹15,000. The official payout distribution ceremony took place at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus in Ludhiana.

Key Highlights of the 'AADI' Carbon Program

The initiative is operated under the AADI (Agri-tech Adaptation for Decarbonization and Inclusivity) farmer carbon program, managed by agri-tech firm Grow Indigo.

Strategic Collaboration: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) provides technical expertise, while the Union Ministry of Agriculture oversees the initiative.

National Reach: The program spans 7 states, encompassing over 1 lakh farmers and more than 20 lakh acres of agricultural land.

Beneficiary Profile: Financial rewards were granted to farmers who actively practiced sustainable, climate-smart agriculture between 2019 and 2022.

Sustainable Practices Adopted:

Direct Seeded Rice (DSR): Reduces water usage and methane emissions.

Zero/Minimum Tillage: Preserves soil structure and prevents carbon loss.

Crop Residue Management: Eliminates stubble burning by integrating crop residue back into the soil.

Scientific Verification and Market Democratization

Before releasing funds, independent and transparent scientific evaluations were conducted to measure soil carbon sequestration and emission reductions using the internationally recognized Verra VM0042 methodology.

Upon successful verification, carbon credits were issued. This first distribution covers approximately 30,000 acres of land and over 50,000 carbon credits.

Democratizing Carbon Markets: Traditionally restricted to large industrial corporations and multinational conglomerates, the 'AADI' program successfully connects grassroots paddy farmers directly to global carbon markets without middlemen or cumbersome paperwork.

Flexible Payout Structure for Farmers

To avoid delay caused by carbon market sales timelines, Grow Indigo issued advance digital payments directly into farmers' accounts, offering two distinct options:

Advance Fixed Payment: Immediate payout of a predetermined, guaranteed amount.

Market-Linked Revenue Share: Receiving a 75% share of the total net revenue once the credits are fully sold on the market.

Environmental & Ecological Impact (2019–2022)

According to Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), scientifically validated farming practices are creating a sustainable secondary income stream for smallholders.

Ministry data reveals significant environmental savings generated between 2019 and 2022:

Ecological MetricImpact Achieved
Water Conservation~4,500 crore liters saved
Stubble Management>200,000 tonnes of crop residue prevented from burning
Air Pollution Reduction>1,000 tonnes of PM 2.5 particle emissions prevented

Expansion Plans

While payouts for the initial 30,000 acres in Punjab and Haryana are complete, verification is underway across more than 200,000 additional acres. As land verification progresses, subsequent tranches will be disbursed directly into the bank accounts of farmers who joined the initiative after 2022.
