Over a decade of purpose-driven CSR initiatives brings health, education, and sustainable livelihoods to over one million people across Singrauli, Sonbhadra, and neighboring regions.
Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a flagship subsidiary of Coal India Limited under the Ministry of Coal, has firmly established itself not only as an energy anchor for the nation but also as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation. Over the past 12 years, the Singrauli-headquartered minicorporate has redefined Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), escalating its annual spend from ₹39 crore in FY 2013–14 to ₹146 crore in FY 2025–26. With a cumulative investment exceeding ₹1,370 crore in regional community development, NCL’s interventions have directly uplifted nearly 10 lakh lives across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Next-Generation Mining Education: To bridge industrial skill gaps, NCL is financing the setup of the Institute of Mining Technology in Singrauli with an investment of ₹76 crore. Managed by the Directorate of Technical Education, Bhopal, this institute will deliver specialized engineering education tailored to modern industrial requirements.
Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities: Through its District Disability Rehabilitation Centres in Singrauli (MP), Sonbhadra (UP), and Surajpur (Chhattisgarh), NCL provides annual rehabilitation—including speech therapy, physiotherapy, counseling, and free prosthetic distribution—to over 2,000 individuals.
Lifesaving Healthcare Interventions:
Project Charak: Backed by an outlay of ₹8.50 crore, this initiative funds life-saving treatments (including heart surgeries, cancer care, and kidney transplants) for underprivileged patients suffering from critical illnesses.
Nanha-Sa-Dil NCL: Focused on congenital heart diseases, this flagship pediatric health drive has screened over 38,000 children and successfully funded free heart surgeries for 240 young patients.
Advanced Medical Infrastructure: NCL provided over ₹14 crore to premier cancer treatment centers in Varanasi (Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre) and allocated ₹6 crore to establish a specialized Gastroenterology Unit at Shyam Shah Medical College in Rewa.
Elderly Care & Dignity: NCL funded the construction of a state-of-the-art 100-bed old age home in Varanasi at a cost of ₹24.76 crore. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this facility provides dignified housing, medical care, and food to destitute senior citizens.
Green CSR & Water Security: To strengthen ecological resilience, NCL invested ₹9.53 crore into catchment area restoration along the Gopad and Mayar rivers. Key works include check dam construction, desiltation, and soil erosion control, which have recharged regional groundwater tables.
Livelihood & Tribal Empowerment:
Vocational Training: Spending ₹3.86 crore to upgrade ITI Waidhan and ITI Dudhi, NCL has delivered market-aligned technical training to over 1,350 local youth, women, and project-affected family members.
Poultry Micro-Enterprises: The 'Small Holders Poultry Project' has empowered 1,050 tribal families—primarily women—to achieve financial self-reliance, with expansion plans underway to integrate 1,500 additional households.
Tribal Student Support: At Seva Kunj Ashram in Chapki (Sonbhadra), NCL’s infrastructure development has created modern sports, archery, and academic facilities benefiting 300 underprivileged tribal students.
Rural Electrification: Bringing energy directly to off-grid communities, NCL electrified 10,253 households in Chitrangi block, raising the living standards of over 40,000 rural residents.
NCL’s CSR portfolio reflects a strategic shift from traditional philanthropy to long-term community empowerment. By balancing its core industrial mandate of coal production with targeted social investments, NCL continues to foster local trust, build sustainable infrastructure, and ensure that regional growth remains genuinely inclusive.
